Breast
Enlargement, or Augmentation Mammaplasty is typically
performed to enlarge small breasts, underdeveloped breasts,
uneven breasts or breasts that have decreased in size
after a women has had children. By surgically inserting
an implant behind each breast, the results can be subtle
to dramatic, depending on your preference. With a Breast
Augmentation procedure, usually an incision is made under
the breast, around the areola (the pigmented skin surrounding
the nipple), in the armpit or through the navel. A pocket
is created for the implant either behind the breast tissue
or behind the muscle between the breast and the chest
wall. Depending on the type and manufacturer of your breast
implant, the implant may be already filled and placed
inside the pocket as is, or it may be flat and then rolled
while attached to a small tube. This type of implant allows
Dr. Francel to insert the implant through a small incision
and "tunnel" it under the skin and place it
into the pocket where it is then filled (with saline)
to the desired size. The small tube is removed and the
breast implant remains filled and permanently sealed.
Breast Augmentation is usually performed as outpatient
surgery. Following surgery, you will wear a gauze dressing
or a surgical bra (without underwire). This style bra
will be worn for several weeks. With Breast Augmentation,
some swelling or discoloration will occur but will disappear
shortly after surgery. Numbness is also common but will
subside as well. Vigorous activities, especially arm movement,
may be restricted for two to three weeks following surgery.
Dr. Francel will discuss possible risks that you should
consider carefully before the procedure.
